The Perfect Gift

A pile of hand-made cards, some intact while others slightly worn out, sketches of favourite fictional characters, collages, hand-written letters with folding creases, bookmarks with bent nooks, frames lining unforgettable photographs, nickname sashes, scoobie key chains, a jar of sea shells, so much so as mushy “Best Friends Forever” wristbands… just my collection of gifts over 19 years. Looking over the emptied contents of a simple but large box, probably my most treasured belonging was an emotional roller coaster that came to a halt, as nearly did my heartbeat, with the realization that something was missing. Relieved to find the USB holding all the virtually received gifts, safe in a corner of the box, I could breathe again.

Gifts, don’t we all love them? From friends, family, and sometimes from strangers too; at special events, on memorable occasions, and sometimes randomly for no particular reason too. Being at the receiving end is definitely enjoyable, but selecting ‘the perfect gift’ at times tends to be quite a complex task for gifts are to be chosen carefully, and more importantly, wholeheartedly. A gift is meant to be a statement of love and care, a gesture to show someone they’re dear to you. However, as if materialism overshadowing us wasn’t enough already, it has started to creep into the fine tradition of gifts. Rather than displaying a hefty price tag or ‘status’, a real present symbolizes your thoughts and emotions.

Having said that, what is it that makes a gift meaningful after all? Well, it’s not rocket science, that’s for sure. It’s simple. Think along lines of what makes you feel special, and spend the time and effort in recognizing what can make the recipient of your gift smile. Gift them something which shows you know them. It need not be wrapped perfectly without creases and tied with a ribbon. I’d be more than pleased to accept a present in bubble wrap. Come on, who doesn’t love that? As a keen CS student, my idea of a perfect gift from a friend would be a self-coded computer program, wishing an otherwise regular “Happy Birthday!” Express something mutual between you; an inside joke, perhaps? Such a gift highlights a unique relationship, reflects the memories shared, and carries an underlying promise to yet create new ones.

So customize! Don’t try to look for trends when it comes to presents. What might be just an ordinary thing to someone could hold immense significance in the eyes of someone else. Be sincere, bring out your creativity, personalize and your perfect gift is bound to be well-received, and in the course of it all, your time and effort will be worth the satisfaction. It would be unfair to say gifts have lost their meaning today, for countless people retain the true essence of gifts and I, for one, can gratefully huddle my bunch of friends under the same umbrella given the crazy ideas we come up with for presents. Tell us what perfect gifts you’ve given or received!
