The Strangest of Phobias

phobias

Phobia; a psychological anxiety disorder characterized by fear. Not just fear, but the persistent and irrational fear of certain objects or situations. We are mostly aware of the common phobias, the fear of heights (Acrophobia), closed spaces (Claustrophobia), flying (Aviophobia), water (Aquaphobia), spiders (Arachnophobia), public speaking (Glossophobia) and several more which seem justified enough, and if not, they probably will after this list of the strangest of phobias;  even more than the fear of superstitions such as the number 13, (Triskaidekaphobia) or Friday 13th and humanoid figures (Automatonophobia) such as clowns and dolls. Here are the 10 most odd things people are abnormally afraid of:

1. Balloons – Globophobia

While most of us will squeal in joy entering a room full of balloons, but few might just scream their lungs out. Certainly a party popper.

2. Buttons – Koumpounophobia

They must have a hard time with clothes. I might too, from now onward.

3. Cheese – Turophobia

But… what about pizza?!

4. Hair – Chaetophobia

Looks like hair is not a dimension of attractiveness to everyone.

5. 666 – Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia

It seems 13 is not the only scary number. Dubbed “The Number of The Beast”, the only part of the name that makes sense to me is “hexa”. And of course “phobia”.

6. Colours – Chromophobia

Being colour blind could be a blessing for such people.

7. Standing or Walking – Stasiphobia

Well… it may not always be laziness.

8. Gravity – Barophobia

Avoiding this one is not an option, as long as you’re on Earth at least.

9. No Mobile Contact – Nomophobia

Doesn’t seem at all that strange. Most of us stand guilty of this one.

10. Home surroundings and appliances – Oikophobia

There might really be no place like home for them. No place that scary at least. Guess it’s not always “Home Sweet Home”.

Most phobias seem very appropriately named, but nothing beats this:
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia; the fear of long words, for which there could not possibly be a better name, unless it’s even longer.

Knowing such bizarre fears that do happen to exist, one might be afraid of having them. No worries, there’s a name for that too. Phobophobia, the fear of phobias.
